541 COFFRET OF CARVED IVORY BYZANTINE, 12TH CIINTURY Rectangular box, the sides with bas-relief medallions of holy women and saints in circular medallions, separated by rosetted foliations and with ajouré patterns and engraved disks as border ornament. The cover composed of three rows of bas-relief, of whieh the upper and lower represent Evangelists and their emblems. The centre with the Nativity flanked by two bust representations of saints in em-broidered robes, with angels and their emblems. Hinges, hasp and feet of brass of comparatively modern addition.
